FerroSilicon

Introduction

Ferrosilicon (FeSi) is a master alloy made of silicon and iron. The production is based on silicon quartz, iron ore, coal, coke and biocarbon.
The alloy is mainly used as a deoxidant and an alloying element in the production of steel and cast iron which is achieved by:
• A change in the chemical composition of the steel
• The removal of harmful impurities such as Sulphur, Nitrogen or Oxygen
• A change in the solidification process, for example, upon inoculation.

Applications

Ferrosilicon has many applications in steel production and casting. It contributes an increase in hardness, deoxidizing properties, corrosion resistance, strength, hardness, and thermal stability of products. It is also used for manufacturing inoculants which can deliver specific metallurgical properties to the final products.

• Stainless steel: to resist against corrosion, hygienic, aesthetic and wear-resistance qualities
• Carbon steels: used extensively in suspension bridges and other structural support material and in automotive bodies
• Alloy steel: other types of finished steel
• Deoxygenating in steel production
• Reducer in the production of other Ferro-alloys
• Alloy element in producing steel & cast iron
